I am not a music guru but just want to tell you about my experiences and understanding of music. Music is a combination of sounds that the composer puts together to make a song or a piece. Some people listen or play to relax, some for fun, while others do so as a profession.

I started learning music when I was six and I’m almost ten now. Since I started learning piano, I have been with two teachers. I learnt all the basic note reading with the first teacher and with the second teacher I started working on harder songs and techniques. I have been learning about different beats and rhythms. I have to admit that even now I am not the greatest at playing violin or piano or singing.

A little less than a year ago, I started violin and so did my brother. I am trying to play different instruments to find out how they sound. I have come to know that if you learn one instrument, the other instrument isn’t as hard as the first one. My brother and I sometimes practice together, which we enjoy. We both appreciate each other’s playing and point out our mistakes. My brother being six is very good for his age.
It wasn’t till my second year of playing instruments that I figured out the basics of beats and rhythm in music. All of a sudden, I found music easy to understand and slowly started to enjoy playing. So if you have just started and think it’s not going to work out for you, keep trying and soon you will start loving music.

Sometimes music doesn’t just effect the person playing it but also the person listening to it, if the music is good enough. That’s why musicians always try their best when they practice but do even better when they perform for audiences.

Playing an instrument is not the only way to make music. You can also sing. Singing is as much fun and as relaxing as playing an instrument. Sometimes people pour their heart and soul into a song. Sometimes people write songs to keep their mind off something bad that just happened. Sometimes people write songs for the fun of composing or just to go with their composition.

There are many types of music. There is blues, bluegrass, rock, classical, folk, ethnic, rap and many more types. Kids my age mostly like rock and other similar kinds of music.

Some types of music come from two or more types combined, like Jazz was made when people combined African music with European music. Even Bluegrass is American Country music mixed with Scottish and Irish influences.

Sometimes instruments sound very good played together. There are duets with two instruments playing or two people singing. Quartets have four instruments playing and in Jazz music, some quartets are very famous. With the help of written music and a conductor even large groups of singers and musicians can perform together. When that happens, like in choruses or in an orchestra it is a real delight to listen.

I hope that if you are not already into music, you will start now. For myself, I hope that I get better at performing but anyway I want to play music and listen to good music for the rest of my life!
