Jagan Nath Kaul (Papaji) A man with mission (October 13, 1924 - December 16, 2008) Padamshri Jagan Nath Kaul lovingly called Papaji passed away on December 16, 2008. The 84 year old had been suffering from an illness for a long time. Padamshri Jagan N. Kaul has been a role model for millions of people around the globe. Born in Srinagar on October 13, 1924 he is survived by his wife and four children. He was well known in KP community for his social work. After the forced displacement of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley, he plunged into helping his fellow community members in exile. Padamshri Jagan Nath Kaul was the President of SOS Children's Villages of India (www.soscvindia.org) and was lovingly called as 'Papaji' by the children. SOS India provides a home for almost 15,000 children in 34 Children's Villages, located in various parts of the country. He grew up to join the Delhi Administration. He rose to the position of Chief, Probation Services and Assistant Director of Social Welfare before proceeding to Ohio, USA, for studies in the field of Institutional Child Care. In 1963 he met late Hermann Gmeiner, founder father of the worldwide SOS Movement, and he decided to return to India, giving up lucrative job offers in the west and established the SOS Children’s Villages of India in 1964. He was recipient of many awards and honour's including Padmashri presented by the President of India, Raja Rammohan Roy Teacher's Award, G.D. Birla Award, Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Award, Twentieth Century Achievement Award (given by the American Biographical Institute, USA), Dadabhai Naroji New Millennium Award, Satpal Mittal National Award and Vayoshrestha Award (Ministry of Social Justice). He was also awarded KOA's KP Annual Award for Excellence in 2006 ( http://jnkaul.blogspot.com ) I had an opportunity to meet Papaji on April 2nd at Hari Parbat situated in Faridabad, Haryana. The entire idea of developing 'Hari Parbat' at Faridabad germinated in the mind of Shri J.N. Koul . The temple is on a hillock with a temple of goddess Sharika on the top and makes one also bow while remembering our Hari Parbat temple in Kashmir. A total of 211 steps have been built to reach the main temple at the top. Papaji will be remembered as a Kashmiri leader who was an institution builder. He single handedly initiated a number of institutions in the field of social welfare, education, culture and religious heritage. It will be difficult to replace such a great leader and a cultural icon. Deepak Ganju

In passing away of Padamshree Sh JN Kaul (Papajee) the community has lost a great visionary and supreme selfless social worker. He can be compared only to Late Kashap Bandu of olden times for his dedicated service and great vision. Papajee was a benefactor of thousands who benefited by his benevolence, truthfulness and great sense of service. May Lord Shiva bless the supreme soul eternally!
