Pandit Amarnath Handoo Shradhaa~njali (An Obituary) Dr. CHAMAN LAL RAINA It is with heavy heart that we heard the passing away of Pandit Amar Nath Ji of KaniKadal, presently at Borhi Jammu. In his passing away, the Kashmiri pandit community lost a great Karma KanDa Pandit. To perform the Karma KaNda with all Shuddhi/purity and Shraddha/devotion, was his devotion to his iShTa devata. He adopted the profession as per his Kula Dharma, and practiced it with all dedication, and love for the Sanatana Dharma. I have been knowing Pandit Ji, since 1961, when he would perform the Chandi Homa at Siboos--my in-laws during the Shaardiya and Vaasanti Nava Ratra days, every year till 1989. While performing the ChanDi Havan, he would observe strict fast, taking just a fruit or water, till the whole Yajnya would be over. This was the rare quality with him. He was a trained Tantra Taraka. which is revered as Tsandra Taruk in Kashmiri, I say with confidence that he was an adept practitioner of the Shakti tradition of performing the Homas, Vedic Yajnyas, and Puranic way of Nava Griha Puja besides the Shanti PrakaraNa and the Kushal Homa, which includes the Upanyan Sanaskara and the Kriyya Karma Paddati. It would be a spiritual retreat to be with him during the Homas and other religious functions. He would guide quite in accordance with the prescribed Laughakshi Paddati. He would never compromise with the the short cuts during the Puja or Havans, or otherwise in other religious matters. He would say: I am no LAUGAKSHI to make the amendments. What a wonderful devotion! He had committed all the Homa Paddati and Shaiva Karma to memory.
(A Pandit is one, who believes in the Maatrishakti of womanhood, and is not interested in having the possession of others, considering that asset just like a lump of soil. He must consider all the jivatman/embodied soul like his own 'Atman', then alone the Pandit is worthy of any appreciation. This in reality is the true philosophy of the Advaita. Pandit ji lived to the tune of this philosophy) I will like to request the Executive Board of the Shehjar to honour Pandit Amar Nath Handu posthumously, for preserving the Traditional Kashmiri Pandit ritualistic heritage in Diaspora, through his devotional Pujas and the knowledge of the SHIAVA KARMA.. He never claimed to be a "Sadhaka" or appended the word Sadhaka with himself, but he was a true Brahmin but unassuming Sadhkaka himself. My Shat Shat PraNAm to his Atman! | ||||||

Amarnath Ji was our family Guru Ji. We got a phone call last night about his sad demise. He was a very devoted and knowledgeable Guru Ji. We have really lost a great Pandit. It is not easy to find people like him now a days. Throughout his life, he performed the Karma KaNda with all Shuddhi/purity and Shraddha/devotion. He adopted this noblest profession as per his Kula Dharma, and practiced it with all dedication, and love. In his passing away, the Kashmiri pandit community has lost a great Karma KanDa Pandit. May his soul rest in peace and may GOD give utmost strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss. He leaves behind 2 sons, 2 daughters and 6 grand children. Deepak Ganju, Miami, Fl, USA Sad, indeed.I was in Jammu recently and was told that Handoo Sahib was not keeping well and had, in fact, stopped moving out.He was our neighbour and a well-wisher too.May his soul rest in peace! Dr.S.K.Raina, Jaipur, India DEATH AT RIGHT TIME IS SALVATION & A STEP TOWARDS THE CHANGE .MAY THE SOUL OF THE DEPARTED REST IN ETERNAL PEACE. Er:Rajinder Raina/RajajI., Frederick, M.D. USA. Pranaam to all those revered oceans of knowledge who kept our SANSKRITI alive and today even when we were loosing everything it is the contribution of each PANDIT; GURU JI and all SCHOLARLY people who by their TAPASYA enabled us to remain vibrant. Let us all strengthen the moral values that these great people like Pandit Amar Nath Handooji has propagated. May Goddess give strenght to bear the loss to his family. Dalip Langoo, Faridabad, India I vividly remember how Pandit Amarnath ji did the traditional Kashmiri Pandit ritualistic puja at Pushkar, in 1999. I along with some my colleagues and students went to observe that pattern from the sociological point of view. I see that the rituals of Kashmiri Pandits are both Vedic and Shaivistic. The way he explained the Puja pattern was all embedded in the Mother tradition of Kashmiri heritage. Dr Sandhya Kaul Raina, Visiting Research Fellow, FIU & Head Deptt of Sociology,Sophia College, Ajmer, India May His Soul rest in Peace in Heaven's above. Anil Bhan No doubt to label Pundit Amar Nath Ji as noblest of the nobles. He was humble and pious. Material gains had no meaning for him. I had the privilege of knowing him through Seerus. Death is inevitable. We have to honour this blank dated death warrant as per His command. It has no apeal. There is no higher court. We have to bear the inevitable loss courageously. Peace is definitely to the noble soul. Pray for courage to the bereaved family and to the community members to face the inevitable. Be blessed along with all others around you with a virtuous, healthy and prosperous life free from any vices. Bríjû dàss chhú vanàn låsív tû båsív. It is hard to believe Pandit AmarNathJi Handu's Nirvana. A Brahman of KP Tradition, he new certain treatments through Mantras, blessed by his mother and later by his own Tapa: & Japa:. He was a shud-purusha and had attained Sidhi in doing so. I have personaly experienced many occasions where in he served the purpose for suffering persons but never used for commercial gains. Our community ows agreat deal to such persons. May God rest his soul in peace.

I am blessed to have had some intimate acquaintances with Pandit Amar Nath Ji over the last twenty years. We reverently called him Papa Ji. Though he was a man of few words but during intense spiritual discourse, one would experience the bliss and sacredness enveloping all around. He was a GURU in true sense and upheld the great tradition of Kashmiri Brahmanism for others to emulate. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
