Once billed as the "Switzerland of the East", attracting more than a million visitors a year, Kashmir region is now struggling to lure tourists amidst a separatist insurgency by Islamic rebels. While foreigners are trickling back since the start of peace talks between India and Pakistan in 2004, local businesses fear they may never be able to recover from the years of economic hardship.

Future of Kashmir in limbo

Political leaders from the restive state of Kashmir have been engaged in talks with the Indian government since 2004, providing hope that a peaceful solution can be found to the 17-year-old separatist insurgency which has claimed more than 42,000 lives. They say their ultimate goal is to establish an independent state, but analysts remain skeptical about India’s willingness to relinquish control over the Muslim-majority region.
