The Invisible Walls

The Invisible Walls

*Dr. K L Chowdhury

I dread not the long and strong fences,

that people raise around their places.

The high walls

they build around their homes

do not put me off.

I believe

there are no ghosts living there

within those ramparts,

neither goblins nor witches,

nor conspirators,

but mortals like you and me

wanting a bit of privacy.

Sitting here I can relate with them,

and see beyond those walls

and move across those fences

to discover a flower smiling at me,

a friendly dog wagging his tail ,

a bird breaking into song,

a kindly face in warm welcome.

What I fear

is the invisible walls

that people raise round themselves

that make them so impregnable,

so near and yet so inaccessible.

They may let you shake their hand,

yet it is so casual, so cold;

you may be able to meet their eyes,

yet so elusive are they, so remote;

you could give them an earnest hug

only to find them stiffen and cringe.

I fear the invisible lines

they draw around themselves,

the maredrekha

which you can not cross

without getting singed.

I fear the cordon of an electric field

they throw round themselves

that could so easily electrocute.
