6th KP National Cultural meet – 2013
Lake Tahoe CA, USA, September 3 2013
ith 5 consecutive KP National Cultural Meets behind us, the volunteer team yet again put together a memorable event this 6th time again. It was the spirit of “Samav Karav Gindunna” that brought so many Kashmiri families together this time at Lake Tahoe, CA – a resort like location and myself, Archana Raina recapping from my nook in Cupertino, California!

The 6th KP National Cultural meet – 2013 was held Aug 31st – Sep 2nd in Lake Tahoe, CA the largest alpine lake in North America with a panoramic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Almost 4 hrs away from San Francisco this location reminded us of our dear Kasheer and the lovely hotel setting was minutes away from the shore like sands of Lake Tahoe. The KP registration team greeted everyone with warmth and smile and provided personalized lanyards and Chai, and snacks as the guests checked into their respective rooms to freshen up for the evening of togetherness about to unravel.
The main cultural activities were organized at the South Lake Tahoe City Recreation Center which is nestled in the middle of the woods - a 10 min drive from the hotel. The MC Neil Raina kicked off the festivities with a personal and comic narrative of growing up in USA as a Kashmiri Hindu and why we all Kashmiri are different and so unique and why we need to preserve the uniqueness of our culture. Kapil Raina then spoke about why he keeps coming back to these functions inspite of having been brought up in America. It is the warmth and love showered by the KP’s that he keeps coming back to. So Thoughtful!

Then our own Rajeev Sumbly started the Koshur Jeopardy which was to test the knowledge of the audience with the quiz about Kashmiri proverbs. It was followed up by live music from Andaaz’s Raju and Divya that stirred the souls of the audience – young and old. There was a twist and flavor added to the musical performance by IndiSax’s Ramesh Maraj who came back again this year with more scintillating tunes of saxophone music. This got the audience on to their feet while dancing to the tunes. Dinner was served while the extravaganza continued. And again the volunteers took great pains to bring the caterer and have him put together a typical Kashmiri cuisine.

Day 2:
The second day of the camp (Sunday) started with a usual tradition of hiking for a few fitness enthusiasts. Everybody congregated in the restaurant next to hotel for a complete mix of desi and continental breakfast. After breakfast everybody headed towards the El Dorado beach picnic area. The picnic area was along the beautiful lake shore in a valley surrounded by hills that reminded us all of the beauty of the valley. A few adults and kids got into the waters and enjoyed the swim but most of the kids started playing and building castles on the sandy shores. The men folk started playing volleyball while the ladies started with their usual gup-shup once in a while posing for the photographers to capture beautiful moments. Overall it was great good outdoor fun with all adults and kids engaged and this was followed by food that was catered to the location.
After lunch everybody headed to take a boat ride in the Tahoe Paradise – an 82 foot long two story boat. It was the singing and dancing on the boat that kept the people engaged while enjoying the picturesque beauty of the mountains.
In the evening the attendees came back to the Recreation Center and we kicked it off with some Chai. Immediately under the Stewardship of Naveen Dhar we kicked off the “Kashmir Got Talent” show. Participants had been divided into various teams like Dal Lake, Hari Parbat, Pahalgam etc and they took some time during the breaks and came back with very entertaining skits…the ones that deserve mention were the “Gabbar” skit put forth by “---------” team under the mentorship of Dr. Amrit Nehru.

This was followed by performances of our own shining stars – our dear Kashmiri kids who collectively hosted the Kids segment. This segment was probably the highlight of this whole event and was a proud moment for all the parents. “Yes, we raised them right ?”
After Dinner , we had Koshur Maenzraat followed by Late nigh fun in Nevada Casino’s…
Day 3:
Saying Good Bye is always hard but with the promise and commitment to come back next year…And the tradition must continue!
